If you work with human cells, cell lines, blood, tissues, cell cultures, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, or anticipate exposure to those materials (Bloodborne Pathogens or BBP).

If you perform job duties in a laboratory or may have the potential to be exposed to human blood or body fluids but are not a researcher. Contact the trainer to schedule a classroom session of this training.

Biosafety

If you are assigned to work with, or in the vicinity of, potentially infectious or otherwise hazardous materials deriving from plant, animal or human sources - including infectious agents, toxins, an recombinant/synthetic nucleic acid molecules.

Course Frequency: Must be completed every 3 years.

    • Your sponsor/PI will need to add your name to his/her Members tab in BioRAFT.
    • If you are due to update any of the training modules mentioned above, follow the prompts to update your training.
  • If you work at Yerkes: Continue to use ELMS to complete the Yerkes Lab Safety and BBP training. You will receive credit for the EHSO Research Lab Safety and EHSO BBP training in BioRAFT. You will need to complete Biosafety (if due for the 3-year update) in BioRAFT.
  • If you have received instructions for a temporary account in BioRAFT, follow instructions provided in the introductory email. Use the option “(Click here for other access methods)” – small text on left side of screen.
  • If you have completed your training in ELMS and your training is current, you do not need to complete them again in BioRAFT this year.

Shipment of Infectious Agents and Biological Materials 240220

If you ship infectious agents, biological materials and/or dry ice. This training is available in a classroom setting once every other month.

Shipping Training Registration will be carried out through the Emory Learning Management System (ELMS). To enroll:

  1. Go to: https://elmprod9.emory.edu/. Individuals must enroll into the course (code 240220) no later than 10 days before the training date. The financial information (Smart Key/Speed Type) must be provided at the time of enrollment. The cost for registration is $100.00.
  2. The manager/supervisor must approve the individual’s request for enrollment. If working with human source materials (blood, body fluids, cells, tissues, cell lines), EHSO will verify that the individual has completed EHSO - BBP for Research (in BioRAFT) and Hepatitis B Vaccination (three doses plus titers for HBSAB) before approval of the Shipping registration.
  3. After all information is verified, each individual will receive an email confirmation from EHSO stating that registration is complete.
  4. If Training and Vaccination cannot be verified, you will be dropped from the class.
  5. A $30.00 cancellation fee is charged to your department if a cancellation notice is not received within 5 days of the class. You can drop your enrollment in ELMS. For instructions go to: https://www.emory.edu/elms-training/learner/Dropping-Enrollment-Activity.html.

For employees who enter confined spaces, including steam manholes, tunnels, boilers, tanks, cooling towers, air handling units, fans, fire boxes, or elevator shafts.

Course Frequency: Must be completed annually.

Energy Control (LOTO) 240170

For employees who use machines or equipment on which servicing or maintenance is performed under an Energy Control Program, or work in an area where servicing or maintenance is performed, or perform maintenance on equipment or machines.

Hazard Communication for University Workers 240140

For non-laboratory staff who work with chemicals or have the potential to be exposed to chemicals in a non-laboratory work environment.

Course Frequency: Must be completed annually with supervisor retraining whenever a new chemical is introduced to the work area.

For Emory Police Department Personnel who work with chemicals or have the potential to be exposed to chemicals.

Course Frequency: Must be completed annually.

Heat Stress 242100

For employees who work in areas and/or with equipment that produces high heat.

Course Frequency: Must be completed annually.

Ladder Safety 242200

For employees who use portable or fixed ladders as a part of their job duties.

Course Frequency: Must be completed every 3 years.

Noise 242300

For employees who work in areas and/or with equipment that produces high noise.

Course Frequency: Must be completed annually.

Personal Protective Equipment 240175

For personnel who work in a non-laboratory setting and are required to wear PPE (other than respirators and hearing protectors), e.g., hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, etc.

Powered Industrial Truck (pre-requisite for Module 2) 242220

This training must be completed by all Emory University employees, including faculty, staff, and student employees who are designated by their departments to operate, repair, or maintain powered industrial trucks. This includes: fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines.

For faculty, student assistant, or student in the Visual Arts Department.

Walking, Working Surfaces Fall Protection 242210

For Emory University students and employees who perform any work activities that expose them to slips, trips, or falls through unguarded floors, wall openings, floor holes, and falls from elevated work platforms and roofs. This does not include work that can safely be done from a ladder.

Course Frequency: Must be completed annually.

Water Intrusion/Flood Response 242400

For Campus Services personnel who respond to water intrusions.

Course Frequency: When existing laser systems are modified and new laser systems are added to lab, or at the discretion of the Laser Safety Officer (LSO).

Lab Safety Awareness (moved to BioRAFT, see below instructions) For minors or high school students who participate in activities in research laboratories.
Research Laboratory Safety (moved to BioRAFT, see below instructions)

For personnel, including volunteers or work study students that participate in research activities involving work with hazardous chemicals in laboratory quantities.
