Laboratory Worker Training Manual

PREFACE

Welcome to the Introductory Radiation Safety Training Course presented by members of the Radiation Safety Office.  It is important that anyone working with radioactive material have a basic understanding of radiation effects for their own protection and the protection of others in the laboratory.  Also, State of Georgia Rule 391-3-17-.07 requires that individuals who are engaged in licensed activities involving radioactive material be aware of the presence of radioactive material at the facility and be trained in health protection problems associated with exposure to radiation and radioactive material.  Training must include measures which they can  take for their own protection including reporting of conditions which may contribute to excessive exposures and response to warnings made in the event of any unusual occurrence or malfunction that may involve radiation exposure.  All personnel subject to monitoring shall be advised of exposure reports which are issued monthly and annually.  Radiation workers shall also be aware that if they believe the licensee is in violation of State Rules and Regulations, they may request an inspection by giving notice of the violation in writing to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources,  Radioactive Materials Program.  A copy of the notice shall be provided to the licensee prior to or at the time of the inspection. We hope that this program will increase your basic knowledge of radioactive material and enable you to feel more confident as you pursue your work in the laboratory.  Anytime we can be of additional assistance, please contact us at 727-5922.
